Read This When You're Not Sure What to Post.

Let’s be honest, sometimes the social media struggle is real.  You’re working hard to build your brand and share the unique perspective of your business, but the social media world is enormous and can be completely overwhelming.

One minute you’re scrolling through instagram looking for inspiration for your next post and the next thing you know, two hours have passed and you know exactly how to DIY that coffee table you’ve had your eye on, but you still have no idea what to post to your account.

If you’re struggling with what to post on social media, or feeling like you have “writer’s block” – Stop what you’re doing right now. I have an exercise for you! Seriously though, you have to stop mindlessly scrolling and consuming content for 5 minutes and try this out…

Okay pick up your phone, and pretend you are your client. You know who I’m talking about, right? Not just A client… THE client. The one that you could work with over and over again. Put yourself in their shoes and put their phone in your hand. All set? How comfy are those amazing shoes?

Go ahead and name them if you’re making yours up or pretend you're the client you have worked with before that you love.

For the sake of this exercise, my ideal client's name is.. Sarah.

Now ask yourself, “What does Sarah want to see today?  What does she need to see today?”  If they are in need of your service and they hop on Facebook or instagram, or maybe their email newsletter, what kind of message is going to relate to them?

Here’s what this can look like in real life… If you’re a realtor, it’s likely your clients need to see tips on the best way to stage their house before they sell it. Think about the advice you would give to a friend preparing to sell her house. Make a list of your top 5 staging recommendations and then turn them into a reel! You get to have fun making a creative helpful reel and your clients get to benefit from your awesome advice. Not to mention - they get to see your personality shine through. Win win!

If you’re a photographer, your clients probably want to see gorgeous photos that give them the confidence and inspiration they need to book their next session. Make that feed shine! Show off your stunning photos and draw people in with personal anecdotes from each photo session. Share stories that help your clients picture themselves in your photos. As you are wearing your client’s shoes, so to speak, focus on what’s in it for them.

It’s super easy to get caught up in our own heads and our own life – we get stuck thinking about what’s going on in our business, when we need to actually stop and put ourselves in our client’s shoes. We need to ask, “What’s going on in your life, Catherine?”  “How can I help you today, Sarah?” Remember, you’re not posting just to post because you haven’t said anything in a while.  You’re not posting because that other business that’s similar to you posted this cool picture today and you’re trying to keep up.

Creating content is something you do because you have something to say to your client. You have a unique voice and can offer a fresh take on the questions your clients need answered. Be specific. Be intentional.  Be authentic. Now pick up your phone, play imagination for a second, and pretend that you are your ideal client. Alright, happy posting!

If you found this quick tip helpful for those moments where you want to make sure you’re saying something meaningful to your customers, reach out and let me know! I would love to hear from you. And if you find yourself in need of help with monthly content creation, or are looking for fun, authentic brand photography that will stop your clients scrolling in their tracks, shoot me a message and let’s get to know each other.  Always happy to discuss how I can help!
